What is transfer of learning? Transfer of learning is the “ability” of an individual to take the knowledge and skills they acquire during a learning intervention and apply them in real life on the job.

Transfer of learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It takes the coordinated effort of several individuals to ensure that it occurs. Those individuals are: the learner, the supervisor, the trainer and sometimes even the co-workers.

The transfer of learning is basically a process of interrelated tasks performed by supervisors, trainers, learners and co-workers before, during and after a learning intervention to maximize the transfer of knowledge and skills necessary to improve job performance.

The key to successful transfer of learning is appropriate training curriculum; support from supervisors and peers, sufficient time for learner to practice and use newly acquired knowledge and skills on their job, and monitor and evaluation learning transfer to document that transfer has occurred.
