A learning objective is an ‘outcome statement’ that explains what specific knowledge, skills, attitudes, or behaviors learners should be able to exhibit following instruction. So, basically it’s an educational objective.

For the ‘outcome’ to be successful, the educational objective (or learning objective) must be S.M.A.R.T.: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Targeted.

Specific – precise detail

Measurable – capable of being observed

Attainable – to achieve a goal or desired state, within specified time and conditions

Relevant – having some sensible or logical connection and importance to job performance

Targeted – a goal toward which effort (desired learning) is directed

The educational objective (learning objective) is a well-written description of what the learner will be taught and is expected to master. The learner can only be measured if they can demonstrate a behavior that provides evidence of their newly-acquired knowledge or skill.
